Great news, Matthews! The Board of Commissioners has approved $11 million in general obligation bond funding to make Purser-Hulsey Park a reality, along with improvements to other local parks. This comes after the voter-approved 2022 Parks and Recreation Bond Referendum, and it’s a big step toward better recreational spaces for everyone in Matthews.
The plans for the 93-acre Purser-Hulsey Park include an all-abilities playground, nature trails, picnic areas, a pond with a pier, an amphitheater, a splash pad, a clubhouse, and more! The bond will also fund upgrades at Windsor Park, Rice Park, and Squirrel Lake Park. Plus, the Riverbanks Greenway Connector will make it easier for people to walk or bike between River Banks Road and the Four Mile Creek Greenway.
To support this bond issuance, there will be an expected 1.35-cent per $100 valuation impact on the property tax rate beginning in 2025, which is estimated to be an increase of less than $5 a month for most homeowners in Matthews.
The Town expects to receive the funds by late April, and design work on Purser-Hulsey Park will start this summer. Construction is expected to take about two years.
We can’t wait to see these projects come to life! The Board of Commissioners approved the resolution with a 4-3 vote.
